Why would you combine the two? They are totally different styles and vibes. Funk is freaky and fun like getting it on with a strangers at a concert in the dessert, while Soul is meaningful and moving like spooning on the couch with the one you marry. My guess is they were mashed together by the same person who named Red onions (even though they're purple) and Eggcreams (that have no egg in them).
Listen to some funk and listen to some soul and tell me if they sound anything alike:

Mmmmmm, I like both funk and soul a lot. But I agree that they're totally different. :) I'm partial to jazz and soul--but then again, it has to depend on the mood, and I'm never in the same mood for long. (^.^)))))
